ハインリヒ・フォン・クライスト（Heinrich von Kleist、1777年 – 1811年）の戯曲『ペンテジレーア』（Penthesilea）は、1808年に発表された悲劇作品です。この劇は、ギリシア神話に登場するアマゾネスの女王ペンテジレーアと、トロイア戦争の英雄アキレウス（アヒレス）の悲劇的な愛を描いています。
物語の背景
アマゾネスは女性だけの戦士国家で、その存続のために特殊な法を持っています。彼女たちは戦場で男性を捕らえ、子孫を残すために一時的に交わった後、男性を解放します。生まれた男児は殺され、女児のみが育てられます[11]。
物語の展開
トロイア戦争の最中、ペンテジレーアはアマゾネス軍を率いて戦場に現れます。彼女はアキレウスに一目惚れし、彼を捕らえようと激しく戦います。アマゾネスの法では、戦いで勝利した相手とのみ結ばれることができるためです[2][11]。
アキレウスもペンテジレーアに惹かれますが、二人の愛は悲劇的な結末を迎えます。一度ペンテジレーアがアキレウスに敗れて捕虜となりますが、アキレウスは彼女の名誉のために、逆に自分が敗れたと嘘をつきます[6]。
その後、アキレウスはペンテジレーアを妃としてギリシアに連れ帰ろうとしますが、ペンテジレーアは部下に救出されてアマゾネスの陣営に戻ります。アキレウスは彼女を諦めきれず、再び決闘を申し込みます。今度は意図的に負けて、ペンテジレーアの捕虜となることを決意します[6][11]。
悲劇的結末
しかし、ペンテジレーアはアキレウスの意図を誤解し、復讐心に駆られます。決闘の場に現れたアキレウスを殺害し、さらに彼の遺体を犬とともに引き裂いてしまいます[2][6][11]。
正気に戻ったペンテジレーアは、自分の行為を理解できず、最初は信じようとしません。真実を知った彼女は、アマゾネスの法を拒絶し、自らも命を絶ちます[11][15]。

この作品は、個人の感情と社会の規範の衝突、愛と暴力の関係、そして自然な感情と人為的な法の対立を描いています[13]。
